How to use a past paper properly
A step-by-step past-paper cycle: attempt, check with an authorised mark scheme, diagnose, correct and retry.
15–30 minutes
Use a small section first. Attempt it without notes, then check it with the authorised mark scheme or teacher feedback you possess. Name why marks were lost, correct the weak part, make one related prompt and retry later. Simply completing more papers does not guarantee that the same mistake will change.
Useful for: Learning how a question works, practising under realistic conditions and turning teacher or mark-scheme feedback into a better next attempt.
Do this now
- Choose a lawful source. Use a paper and mark scheme supplied by your school, exam board or another source you are permitted to use. How2Revise does not reproduce them.
- Attempt a small section. Put notes and the mark scheme away. Read the instruction, choose a realistic time and make a genuine attempt.
- Check with evidence. Use the authorised mark scheme, worked answer or teacher feedback. Do not award marks because your answer ‘sounds about right.’
- Name the gap. Was the problem missing knowledge, choosing a method, applying it, explaining it, reading the question or managing the time? Pick the most useful category.
- Correct and retry. Improve the weak part, cover the correction and redo it. Write one new prompt that will reveal whether the same gap returns.

Why this method can help
The useful part of a paper is the feedback loop. Naming the gap helps you choose a different next action instead of repeating the same error under new question wording.
It is still a method, not a guarantee. The pupil checks subject accuracy against the teacher material, notes, worked example or authorised mark scheme they possess.
Common mistakes
- Reading the mark scheme before making an attempt.
- Copying a model response and counting it as your own answer.
- Treating every lost mark as missing knowledge.
- Completing too large a section to check properly.
- Sharing or uploading copyrighted paper content to an unauthorised service.
Adapt it without changing the active step
For a procedure
Compare each step with the authorised worked method, cover the correction and repeat the process with another permitted question.
For an extended response
Check features against the mark scheme or teacher rubric. Improve one feature, rather than treating a model answer as the only possible wording.
If a full paper feels too large
Use one question or one short section. Build checking skill before adding timing or full-paper conditions.

A note for parents
Praise the quality of checking, not just the mark. Ask: ‘What kind of mistake was it, and what will you do differently on the retry?’
